Associate Professor & Extension Specialist, Department of Entomology, OSU/OARDC
Dr. Luis Cañas (PhD) received his MS and PhD in Entomology from Purdue University. Currently he is Associate Professor and Extension Specialist in Entomology at Ohio State University. Dr. Cañas is nationally and internationally recognized as an expert in the management of insect pests that attack plants in controlled environments with more than 20 years of experience. His research provides applied solutions to problems caused by thrips, whiteflies, aphids and mites among others. His areas of expertise include insect management using insecticides and biological control agents, biodemography, and insect-plant interactions. Recently, Dr. Cañas published work on the functional response of a beneficial predator that controls whiteflies and he has evaluated the effect of some biopesticides on thrips. Currently he is doing work on the compatibility of various chemistries with selected biological control agents used against greenhouse pests and on improving the way predatory mites are released in the greenhouse.
